De Misa Mausoleum – Coode Conservation

The conservation and restoration of the ironwork on this late Victorian mausoleum in London was carried out in conjunction with main contractors Cliveden Conservation, who were carrying out conservation of other elements of the mausoleum. The mausoleum had retained all its original ironwork, so the elements we treated included wrought iron window grilles, cast iron apex details, roof corner finials and cast iron railings and gates. The work carried out included replication of missing parts, a number of repairs, surface preparation and application of new paint layers.

The front railings had significant paint loss, but structurally were in good condition.
The North window grilles were beyond repair, and new ones were commissioned to replace the originals.
Where possible, original material was saved and re-used.
New cast parts were made from the originals and joined into place using traditional skills.
A completely new corner finial was made using the originals as patterns. We also made replica parts to replace missing components on the remaining finials.
Installation of the window grilles over newly restored stained glass windows were cause for extra care and attention.
The South and West window grilles were sympathetically restored, with some new material introduced where necessary.
The roof apex was repaired and cleaned, followed by reinstatement of a paint scheme in the original colour.
The finished mausoleum with new/old stock cast iron guttering now stands out from the rest of the graveyard.
